The building itself pays homage to the history of the area by displaying a beautiful whole wall mural showing a Cherokee painted by a then, 20 year old art student, Corrina Luckenbach, commissioned to recognize, respect, and honor the Cherokee people who inhabited the lands which is now known as Hayesville as a testimony to the Cherokees who lived and raised families on these lands for thousands of years. A large plaque that describes the Quanassee Path – A Cherokee History Trail -- is attached to the wall under the porch.

Clay County Progress is the weekly newspaper based in Hayesville, serving Clay and Cherokee counties in North Carolina and Towns County, Georgia. Over time the local newspaper serving Clay County has been through several “permutations” since 1902. After previous newspapers had come and gone, the Clay County Progress was started in 1951. Publishing rights were sold to The Cherokee Scout in nearby Murphy in 1961 and the Scout printed a combined Cherokee Scout and Clay County Progress edition between 1961 and 1980. The Progress although a separate newspaper, has been printed on the Scout's press ever since. The Clay County Progress has been the only newspaper in Clay County since January 2012 and is now owned by Paxton Media Group, of Paducah, Kentucky, a privately held media company with holdings that include newspapers and a TV station, WPSD-TV in Paducah.
The Progress has sponsored Clay County's annual Christmas parade since its inception in 1987. The parade gets bigger and better every year and always starts honoring Veterans and ends with Mr. & Mrs. Santa. It is eagerly anticipated and enthusiastically supported by local businesses and organizations and welcomed around the square by everyone.

The Clay County Progress actively covers and promotes local events, offers opportunities to local guest writers and devotes several pages to highlight Hayesville School sports recognizing the youth of the town.
It publishes comprehensive special magazines from time to time including a “Welcome to Clay County”, “Home for the Holidays” and this year a very special ”America 250” Semiquincentennial celebration magazine, all free to the public and all full of very useful information.

The Progress began publishing "Reader's Choice" awards in 2022 giving readers a vote for many local businesses in categories “Best Local Goods and Services”, “Best Local Food & Drink” and “Best Local People, Places and Things”.
